VILLANOVA, Pa. - Jeff Matteo and Paul Szewczyk each scored a pair of goals to spark the St. John's Red Storm to a 5-1 victory over the Villanova Wildcats in a game here Sunday afternoon.
St. John's (5-1-0, 3-1-0 Big East), ranked No. 8 in the nation, applied intense pressure on the Wildcats from the opening kickoff. That heat resulted in the game's first score at the 9:51 mark when Jeff Mateo beat starting goalkeeper Sean Teesdale (Blue Bell, Pa.). Patrick Lonergan was credited with an assist on the goal.
Less than three minutes later, St. John's struck again. This time it was Matteo, who took a short feed from Marlon Rojas after a corner kick was deflected in the box. Matteo then drilled a shot past Teesdale to make it a two goal edge. That score held through the rest of the first half.
Matteo and Lonergan went to work again at the 51:09 mark, giving the Red Storm its third goal of the day and a comfortable working margin. Matteo got the goal while Lonergan earned his second assist.
At the 74:56 mark, Villanova finally ended a scoreless drought of more than 350 minutes of game action. Freshman Jon Greene headed the ball to Koji Hamada (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), who drilled a shot from 10 yards that beat goalkeeper Bill Gaudette.
As Villanova pressed late, St. John's responded with two more goals. Shalrie Joseph scored an unassisted goal at the 82:17 mark before Szewczyk added his second goal on a breakaway at the 83:22 mark.
Villanova (2-4-0, 0-2-0 Big East) travels to Providence this Friday afternoon. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m.
