NEWTON, Mass. - The Villanova Wildcats gave a srong effort on Sunday afternoon but dropped a 2-0 decision to the Boston College Eagles on a wet afternoon.
The Wildcats carried the play through the game's first 20 minutes, generating several fine scoring chances. Both Jim Curtin (Oreland, Pa.) and Joe Noonan had two shots apiece in that stretch. But the Eagles capitalized on a counter attack, as Chris Cleary finsihed a three-on-two breakout, beating Wildcat goalkeeper Sean Teesdale (Blue Bell, Pa.) at the 23:39 mark of the first half
Another counter attack hurt Villanova just prior to intermission. After the Cats were unable to convert a cross kick, Boston College went the length of the field and a Casey Schmidt shot beat Teesdale to make it a 2-0 game. Adam Pfeifer and Bobby Thompson were credited with assists on the goal.
Villanova pressed the attack in the second half and nearly got on the board on several occasions. Indeed, Villanova outshot the Eagles 16-15 on the day. But the Wildcats could not get the ball past goalkeeper Chris Hamblin, who made seven saves for the Eagles.
The Wildcats (2-5-1 overall, 0-2-1 Big East) return to action on Oct. 1, when they travel to West Virginia for another Big East Conference matchup.
