Syracuse, N.Y. ----- In a Big East field hockey match-up that featured the top two teams in the conference, the No. 19 ranked Syracuse Orangewomen defeated the Villanova Wildcats, 4-3, in double-overtime at Coyne Field in Syracuse, N.Y. on Sunday, Oct. 14. Syracuse sophomore Jackie Sheaffer successfully converted on a penalty stroke with 9:25 remaining in the second overtime to give the Orangewomen their eighth consecutive win. Villanova falls to 9-5 on the year, with all five losses coming in overtime, 3-1 in Big East play. Syracuse improves to 10-2 overall, 3-0 in conference action.
Syracuse junior Michelle Marks gave the Orangewomen a, 1-0, lead at intermission with a goal just over five minutes into the contest.
Villanova tied the score at 1-1 just over two minutes into the second half when freshman Stephanie Mayhart (Hockessin, Del.) tallied her fourth goal of the season.
Syracuse regained the lead at the 30:54 mark when Ann-Marie Guglieri stole the ball and beat Villanova goalkeeper Meghan Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.) to take hold of a 2-1 lead.
The Orangewomen lead would not last for long as sophomore Colleen Helms (Broomall, Pa.) collected a pass from Stephanie Vrettos (West Long Branch, N.J.) scoring Villanova's second goal of the afternoon. Vrettos was credited with the assist.
Syracuse took their third lead of the game with 18:48 left in regulation on a goal by Joanne Lombard. The goal was set-up off of a penalty corner and Guglieri and Michelle Aronowicz assisted on the play.
Villanova tied the score at 3-3 with 16:02 remaining on a penalty corner of their own. Senior Brooke Bergmannn (Fallsington, Pa.) blasted a shot into the back of the cage for her third goal of the season. Sophomore Christina Lugones (Oceanport, N.J.) and freshman Vanessa Pizzulli (Oceanport, N.) each assisted on the goal.
Neither team scored in the first 15-minute overtime period and Syracuse outshot Villanova 6-2. Helwig finished the game with 10 saves, seven coming in overtime.
The Wildcats had an opportunity to score the game-winner on a breakaway. Christina Lugones (Oceanport, N.J.) got by the Syracuse goalkeeper, but defender Becky Kohler batted away the shot to force a second overtime period.
With 9:25 remaining in the second overtime, Syracuse head coach Kathleen Parker subbed Sheaffer into the game to take the penalty stroke. Sheaffer's attempt was good scoring her first career goal.
The game marks the fourth consecutive year Villanova and Syracuse have decided the outcome in overtime with the Orangewomen winning all four games.
The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 16, when they host No. 13 ranked Duke at Villanova Stadium. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. Duke leads the all-time series 4-2.
