Villanova, Pa. - Mike Nugent scored a goal and assisted on another to lead the Princeton Tigers (7-2-3 overall) to a 3-0 victory over the Villanova Wildcats here on Wednesday afternoon. Jason White made two saves in net to post his eighth shutout of the season for the Tigers.
Princeton gained the early advantage when Nugent forced a turnover near the top of the Villanova box. He dribbled to his right and then rolled a ball just inside the far post to beat Wildcats goalkeeper Sean Teesdale (Blue Bell, Pa.) at 9:20 to give the Tigers a 1-0 edge.
Villanova's best scoring opportunity came late in the first half when Dan Massimini (Downington, Pa.) lofted a ball to Chris Blatz behind the Tigers defense. But Blatz' shot sailed over the net and the game remained 1-0 at intermission.
The Tigers kept the pressure on in the second half and notched their second goal at 72:18. Nugent blasted a free kick from above the box off the crossbar. The rebound caromed directly to Will Rodgers, who deposited the ball into the net to make it 2-0.
Matt Behncke completed the scoring when he took a feed from Arturo Tafolla and sent a low shot underneath Teesdale at 82:21.
Villanova (5-10-0) returns to action this Sunday afternoon in its final regular season Big East contest. The Wildcats host Virginia Tech at 1:00 p.m.
