Men's Basketball Edged By Penn, 75-74, In Overtime

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Andy Toole, who will undergo surgery for a stress fracture on Thursday, hit two free throws with 11.7 seconds left in overtime to give Penn a 75-74 victory over local rival Villanova on Wednesday.

Toole had 21 points for the Quakers (6-1), who snapped a five-game losing streak to the Wildcats. Ricky Wright had 23 points and Gary Buchanan 22 points and 11 rebounds for Villanova (3-2), which committed 23 turnovers in the game.

A driving layup by Toole gave Penn a 73-68 lead with 1:55 remaining in overtime, but Villanova scored six straight points and moved ahead 74-73 on Buchanan's layup with 19 seconds left.

The Wildcats held a 62-57 advantage with 4:03 remaining in regulation, but the Quakers rallied to tie the score at 64-64 on two foul shots by Toole with 50 seconds to go.

The first half was a battle of 3-point shots. Villanova jumped out to a 12-4 lead, but Penn went on a 16-5 run, including three 3-pointers to take its first lead at 23:20.

Buchanan sparked a 13-3 Wildcat spurt, hitting on two straight 3-point shots, and the Wildcats built a 38-28 advantage at halftime.

Villanova made all four of its 3-point shots in the first half, while Penn made only 10 of 34 shots, including 6-of-17 from beyond the arc.
