Men's Basketball Downs Temple, 70-66

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Derrick Snowden's 14-foot running jumper with 21.3 seconds left and his ensuing two free throws with 6.1 remaining lifted Villanova to a 70-66 win over local rival Temple Saturday night.

Snowden's basket came after Temple had scored seven straight points to tie it at 66 with 52.5 seconds left.

Ricky Wright scored 18 points, Reggie Bryant came off the bench to score a career high 17 points and Gary Buchanan added 15 for the Wildcats (4-2), who have won two of their last three.

Lynn Greer had 29 points, including 14 in the last 9:30, for the Owls (3-4) but turned the ball over while driving to the basket with 8.1 seconds to go to force Temple's first turnover of the second half.

The game was part of a unique tripleheader at the Palestra which involved all six Division I schools in the Philadelphia area for the first time ever. In the first two games, La Salle defeated Drexel 80-70 and No. 18 St. Joseph's beat Penn 67-61.

A free throw by Wright gave Villanova a 66-59 lead with 2:53 left but Temple went on a 7-0 run, capped by a driving layup by Greer to tie the game with 52.5 seconds left.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Bryant and a fastbreak dunk by Wright capped a 14-4 run as the Wildcats took their biggest lead, 50-36, with 11:32 remaining.
