BOCA RATON, FLA- On Wednesday, March 7, at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla., the Villanova University baseball team was defeated by Florida Atlantic University, 12-1. The Wildcats drop to 3-3 overall on the season with Wednesday night's loss, while the Owls of FAU improve to 12-7.
After a scoreless first inning, the Owls got on the board in the bottom of the second off of Villanova starter Brian Slocum. Already up 1-0 with two outs and runners on first and second, FAU increased its lead to 3-0 as center fielder Gabe Somarriba double home two more runs.
One inning later, the Owls continued its offensive surge. With two runners on base via a walk and a base hit, left fielder Regan Samanieo blasted a three-run home run to right centerfield to give FAU a 6-0 advantage. Before the inning was over, the Owls would add another run to take a 7-0 lead into the fourth inning.
Freshman pitcher Adrian Schau relieved Slocum for the `Cats in the fourth inning after FAU plated two more runs to increase the lead to 9-0. Schau struck out the side in the fourth inning and would end up striking out five consecutive batters and retired nine in a row before the Owls were able to get a hit.
FAU scored three runs in the seventh inning against Schau, who none-the-less finished with an impressive outing in his first collegiate appearance on the mound. Pitching three and two-thirds innings for Villanova, he gave up three runs on three hits and a walk, while striking out seven batters.
The Wildcats plated their first and only run in the top of the ninth inning on an RBI single by junior Rob Cafiero, but it was too little too late for Villanova as the Owls coasted to the 12-1 victory.
Danny Core picked up the win for FAU on the mound to up his record to 4-1. Core threw eight shutout innings, giving up three hits while striking out nine. Slocum got the loss for the Wildcats to fall to 1-1.
Villanova will get back into action on Thursday, March 8, playing Monmouth at FAU's B Field in Boca Raton, Fla., at 2:00 p.m.
