Villanova, Pa. --- The Villanova University women's tennis team fell to the visiting Scarlet Knights of Rutgers University in conference play Wednesday afternoon by a score of 2-5. With the loss, the `Cats now stand at 12-6 overall on the year and hold a 2-2 record in Big East play. Rutgers improves to 9-11 overall, 8-6 in the Big East.
Wildcat junior Ashley Young (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame H.S.), playing at third singles, needed only two sets to defeat Rutgers' Kristin Shaughnessy by a score of 6-2, 6-4. Villanova would go on to take just one more singles match as Kelly McAndrew (Barrington, RI/Barrington) continues to play outstanding in her freshman campaign. She defeated the Scarlet Knights' Andrea Weckstein in a 6-4, 6-3 fifth singles match.
`Nova was swept in the doubles portion of the competition on the afternoon.
The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, April 7th when they host Bucknell University in a match beginning at 12 noon.
