Women’s Tennis Returns Home for Villanova Invitational This Weekend

VILLANOVA, Pa. — The Villanova women's tennis team wraps up its fall regular season with the Villanova Invitational this weekend. The invitational will begin on Friday, October 2, and run through Sunday the 4th. 

The Wildcats will travel across the greater Philadelphia area each of the days to play its matches. On Friday, the team will head to Delaware to open the tournament, with play starting at 1 p.m. Saturday's slate of play will take place at Temple University at 9 a.m., while Sunday is at Drexel, also at 9 a.m.

This past weekend, VU competed in Navy's Blue and Gold Invitational in Annapolis, Md. The 'Cats had two players make it deep into singles play in Flight A, with Olivia Corcoran and Bella De Luise each making the Semifinals before falling.

Corcoran began the Round of 16 against Navy's Peyton Amspacher-Philemon. The two battled through three sets before Corcoran secured the victory, 7-5, 3-6, 11-9, to move on to the quarterfinals. In the next round, she faced William & Mary's Francesca Davis and earned a convincing two-set win, 6-2, 6-1. Corcoran then pushed her semifinal match against William & Mary's Nicole Lukesova to three sets, but ultimately fell 6-1, 2-6, 10-4.
De Luise also began the tournament with a three-set battle, taking on George Washington's Solange Skeene. After dropping the opening set in a tiebreak, De Luise bounced back to claim the match, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 10-4. She continued her run in the following round with a straight-set victory over St. John's Nao Kojima, winning 7-5, 6-1. In the semifinals, however, De Luise's tournament came to an end with a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Richmond's Sofia Maria Barbulescu.

In doubles action, Jenna Stevens and Lauren Monti picked up the sole win for the 'Cats in the round of 16. The pair took down Younsoo Cho and Nao Kojima from St. John's 6-4 before being eliminated in the Quarterfinals.
