Villanova, Pa. ----- In her seventh season at Villanova, head coach Joanie Q. Milhous earned her 59th career victory making her the all-time career wins leader as the Wildcats defeated the visiting West Chester Golden Rams, 3-1, on Wednesday, Sept. 19. With the win she surpasses former Villanova coach Cheryl Massaro who coached on the Main Line from 1983-89.
The Wildcats were able to do what three teams failed to do this season, score on West Chester goalie Joelle Maguire (nine saves). Maguire entered the contest holding the opponent scoreless for 245 minutes. Villanova scored two first half goals less than 80 seconds apart from each other en route to the 3-1 victory. The 'Cats improve to 3-2 on the year, as West Chester falls to 4-2.
Wildcat senior Stephanie Vrettos (West Long Branch, N.J.) scored her second goal of the season with 19:43 remaining in the first half. Classmate Brooke Bergmann (Fallsington, Pa.) assisted on the play passing to Vrettos who scored from point blank range.
Just 71 seconds later Villanova struck again. This time it was sophomore Colleen Helms (Broomall, Pa.) collecting a pass in front of the cage from Bergmann, who was credited with her second assist of the evening.
West Chester managed to cut the lead to 2-1 at intermission with a goal by Kristin Schulberger who deflected a shot by Kendra Wood past Villanova goalkeeper Meghan Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.). Helwig finished the night with five saves
The Wildcats defense limited West Chester to only one shot attempt in the second half and added an insurance goal by freshman Stephanie Mayhart (Hockessin, Del.), tallying her first career goal. Sophomore Christina Lugones (Oceanport, N.J.) assisted on the goal.
Villanova opens Big East Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 22, when they travel to Storrs, Conn., to face-off against the No. 14 Huskies. Game time is scheduled for noon.
