Easton, Pa. ----- Senior co-captain Brooke Bergmann (Fallsington, Pa.) tallied one goal and added an assist in Villanova's 3-1 victory over the Lafayette handing the Leopards their first loss of the season. The Wildcats improve to 2-1 on the year as Lafayette drops to 2-1.
With the win head coach Joanie Q. Milhous won the 80th game of her 11 year coaching career and is now tied with former Villanova coach Cheryl Massaro as the all-time winningest field hockey coach at Villanova. In her seventh season with the Wildcats Milhous has collected 58 wins.
Bergmann scored the first goal of the afternoon at the 17:56 mark in the first half putting the Wildcats ahead for good. Bergmann broke through a line of Lafayette defenders and fired a shot past the Leopards goalkeeper for her first goal of the season.
With 10:05 remaining in the half, Villanova added to their lead when sophomore Lauren McCarthy (Flourtown, Pa.) deflected a shot by Bergmann past Lafayette goalkeeper Amy Cohen (three saves). Bergmann was credited with the assist.
Lafayette forward Meredith Hahn put the Leopards on the board with 4:48 remaining in the first half scoring off a pass from teammate Megan Monahan making the score 2-1 at intermission.
The Wildcats added an insurance goal in the second half with under four minutes remaining in the contest when senior Krissy Malchitsky (Perkiomenville, Pa.) scored her second goal of the season off a penalty corner. Freshman Vanessa Pizzulli (Oceanport, N.J.) and sophomore Christina Lugones (Oceanport, N.J.) assisted on the goal.
Goalkeeper Meghan Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.) earned her second victory of the 2001 season making eight saves, allowing only one goal in 70 minutes of play.
Villanova returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 5 when they travel into Philadelphia to play the Pennsylvania Quakers in a non-conference match-up. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Franklin Field.
