Chestnut Hill, Mass.- On Sunday, October 20, the Villanova University field hockey team traveled to Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts and came away with a 1-0 win over the #17 ranked Boston College Eagles. With the win, Villanova's record improves to 8-8 on the season and 3-1 in Big East play. The loss drops the Eagles to 11-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
The majority of the game was dictated by stingy defense and spectacular goalkeeping, with both teams unable to find the back of the net throught the first half of play. Villanova's defensive unit of Simone Schunk, Sarah Burdette, Kristen Strocen, Colleen Helms and Vanessa Pizzulli combined with the outstanding performance in goal by Meghan Helwig held the Eagles scoreless.
The Wildcats finally capitalized on their scoring chances with just 6:38 left to go in the game when junior forward Christina Lugones poked a loose ball past a diving Boston College keeper. The goal was Lugones' sixth of the season and her third game-winning tally.
The Eagles mounted a late rally, drawing three consecutive corners with less than two minutes to go in the game. As they had all game, the Villanova defense was able to diffuse the Eagle offense.
Helwig finished the afternoon with nine saves in net.
Villanova gets back into action on Wednesday when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa., for a 6:00 game against the Lehigh Mountain Hawks.
