Philadelphia, Pa.- On Sunday, October 6, the Villanova University field hockey team traveled to St. Joseph's where they dropped an overtime heartbreaker to the Hawks, 1-0. With the loss, the 'Cats record falls to 6-6, while St. Joseph's moves to 5-4 on the season.
Both teams had several scoring chances in regulation, but neither were able to capitalize on their opportunities. The Wildcats best chance came when Vanessa Pizzulli found an open Casey Whalen by the corner of the post, but Whalen's shot went just wide.
With the game deadlocked at the end of regulation, a seven-on-seven overtime period was needed. St. Joseph's did not waste any time, as on a two-on-one breakaway Kathy Sokalski crossed a ball to Kelly Butler, who found the back of the net.
For the game, Villanova outshot the Hawks, 16 to 12 and drew 10 penalty corners to St. Joseph's 8.
Villanova gets back into action on Friday, when Big East rival Syracuse comes to town for a 7:00pm game. The game will mark the last home game for Villanova seniors Sarah Burdette, Christine Donovan, Meghan Helwig and Kristen Strocen.
