Syracuse, NY- On Sunday, November 10, the Villanova Univeristy field hockey team fell to the University of Connecticut 3-1 in the Big East tournament championship game. Villanova's season ends with an 11-9 record, while the Huskies improve to 15-7.
Villanova got on the board first when Sarah Burdette converted a penalty stroke just four minutes into the game to give 'Nova a 1-0 lead. The goal was Burdette's second goal of the tournament.
Seven minutes later, the Huskies evened the score when Lauren Henderson took a pass from Lauren Christie and Kelly Cochrane and found the back of the net.
The score remained knotted at one as both teams headed into the locker room for halftime.
With nine minutes gone by in the second half, Becky Helwig redirected a Laura Thibodeau shot past a diving Meghan Helwig to give Connecticut a 2-1 lead.
Just four minutes later, Henderson notched her second goal of the game off a penalty corner from Christe and Cochrane. For her efforts, Henderson was awarded the Big East Tournament Most Valuable Player award.
The Wildcats mounted a late rally, drawing two penalty corners, but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities.
Meghan Helwig recorded seven saves in the loss, giving her 600 for her career.
