VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Freshman guard Randy Foye scored all of his season-high 16 points in the second half as Villanova survived a shaky first half to defeat UMBC 72-60 on Friday night.

Gary Buchanan added 14 points and Curtis Sumpter had 12 for Villanova (5-3), while Andrew Feeley and P.J. Hatcher each had 14 for UMBC (3-2) in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Villanova made only 11 of 33 shots and committed 10 turnovers in the first half, and trailed 29-26 at the break.

The Wildcats then scored the first 12 points of the second half, capped by a Buchanan 3-pointer, and built a 46-35 advantage with 12:28 to play.

UMBC rallied to within 50-46 on a layup by Feeley with 7:09 to go, but a 12-2 Wildcat run boosted the lead to 62-48 with 4:46 remaining.

Villanova held a 20-11 lead with 7:45 left in the first half, but the Retrievers responded with 11 straight points and moved ahead 22-20 on a 3-pointer by Hatcher.
