Greyhounds Out-Race Wildcat Men's Lacrosse

April 20, 2002

VILLANOVA, PA. ----- The No. 10 ranked Loyola Greyhounds outlasted the Villanova men's lacrosse team and erased a four-goal deficit to defeat the Wildcats, 14-9, at Villanova Stadium, on Saturday, April 20. After the Wildcats took a 7-3 lead at the 8:18 mark of the second quarter, the Greyhounds rallied to score 11 consecutive goals en route to a Colonial Athletic Association victory. With the loss, Villanova falls to 4-7 on the year, 1-4 in CAA play as Loyola snaps its two-game losing streak and improves to 8-2 overall, and a perfect 5-0 mark in the CAA.

With Loyola holding a 2-1 lead, Villanova scored four unanswered goals for a 5-2 lead with 0:21 remaining in the opening frame. Senior Randall Calvert (Ellicott City, Md.) tallied two goals in the stretch while Owen Corso (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) and Matt Lucas (Fairfax, Va.) also chipped in with a goal apiece.

The Greyhounds Michael Sullivan (Abington, Pa.) cut the Wildcat lead to 5-3 in the closing seconds of the first quarter halting Villanova's run.

Villanova pushed its lead to 7-3 with 8:18 left in the quarter on goals from senior Mike Holloway (Malvern, Pa.) and Lucas.

Loyola promptly responded by scoring three goals in the final 5:09 of play in the first half as Villanova entered intermission holding on to a 7-6 lead.

The second half belonged to Loyola's Stephen Brundage (Camillus, N.Y.) who scored a career-high six goals in a 14-minute span, as the Greyhounds extended their run and captured a 14-7 lead with 6:29 remaining in regulation.

Sophomore Scott MacMullan (Arnold, Md.) stopped the Wildcats scoring drought with back-to-back goals. MacMullan's first goal came at the 5:13 mark. Just over three minutes later, MacMullan struck again with his seventh goal of the season, but it was too little too late for Villanova as Loyola went on to a 14-9 victory.

Lucas, a sophomore, paced the Wildcats with three goals in the first half. Brundage finished the game with eight points (six goals, two assists) for Loyola, while Sullivan, an Abington H.S. product, tallied three goals and three assists for Loyola.

Villanova will be back in action on Monday night, April 22, at Franklin Field in Philadelphia when they pay a visit to the No. 15 ranked Pennsylvania Quakers. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
