VILLANOVA, PA. ----- On Tuesday, April 23, the Villanova softball team split a non-conference double-header with Main Line rival, Saint Joseph's at Villanova Softball Field. The Hawks took game one of the series, 5-3, but Villanova regrouped in game two and earned a 5-2 decision. The Wildcats now stand at 39-10 on the year as the Hawks are 26-11 this season.
Game #1: VILLANOVA 3, Saint Joseph's 5
Saint Joseph's jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run homer by senior Theresa Andreani (Matawan, N.J.). The Hawks added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning when Andreani delivered a two-out RBI double down the right field line, allowing freshman Megan Richardson (Bear, Del.) to score. Andreani's third RBI of the game gave the Hawks a 3-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Saint Joseph's lead climbed to 5-0. Megan Brown (Springfield, Pa.) led off with a double to right field and advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt. The Hawks loaded the bases after Cara Deldeo (Dagsboro, Del.) was hit by a pitch and Andreani drew an intentional walk. With two outs, freshman Alicia Cunic (Allentown, Pa.) singled to left field to score two more runs.
Villanova took advantage of a Hawk error and received some timely hitting in the top of the sixth inning and cut the lead to 5-3. With one runner on base and two outs, sophomore Lisa Krueger (Mission Viejo, Calif.) reached base on an error by the Saint Joseph's third baseman. Sara Carlson (Langley, B.C.) came through with a two-RBI double to left field. On the ensuing at bat Allison Wisniewski (Smithtown, N.Y.) hit her 10th double of the season, scoring Carlson to cap the three-run inning.
Freshman Shannon Williams (Allentown, Pa.) threw 4.2 innings and surrendered five earned runs on seven hits. Classmate Kristen Haynes (Fairfax, Calif.) relieved Williams (11-2) in the fifth inning and allowed one hit while striking out three Hawk batters. For Saint Joseph's, junior Brandie Adams (Newtown, Pa.) improved to 11-3 on the year allowing three unearned runs in 5.2 innings of work. Dana Travis (Newark, Del.) picked up the Hawks first save of the season pitching 1.1 innings of shutout relief.
Game #2: VILLANOVA 5, Saint Joseph's 2
In game two, Villanova got on the board first in the top of the second inning on a bases loaded, sacrifice fly by freshman Sarah Wall (Hollywood, Fla.) to score Wisniewski.
In the bottom half of the inning the Hawks evened the score at 1-1. With runners on first and third, Hawks senior Megan Brown (Springfield, Pa.) got caught in a run down between first and second, but Missy Rhoades (Coatesville, Pa.) scored from third before Brown was tagged out.
A two-RBI single by Villanova shortstop Ricci Lugo (San Clemente, Calif.) in the top of the fourth inning gave the Wildcats the lead for good. Saint Joseph's cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Villanova first baseman Heather Garboden (Beaverton, Ore.) sealed the victory with a two-RBI single to left center in the fifth inning to push the Wildcat advantage to 5-2.
Theresa Hornick (Edmonds, Wash.) earned her 20th victory of the season throwing five complete innings. She allowed two earned runs on six hits. Haynes once again came through to close the door on the Hawks for her team-leading fourth save of the season. For Saint Joseph's Travis went the distance giving up three earned runs on 12 hits.
Villanova will return to action on Wednesday, April 23, in a non-conference double-header with Delaware at Villanova Softball Field. The first game of the series is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
