Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y.----- Stony Brook's Denis Scannell (Wantagh, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal with 1:11 remaining in regulation to lift Stony Brook to a 10-9 comeback win over Villanova Saturday, April 6, at Seawolves Field. The win was the fourth straight for Stony Brook (7-3 overall), while the Wildcats slip to 3-5 on the year.

Villanova jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the first quarter on two goals from freshman Marc Creegan (West Babylon, N.Y.) and one from senior Justin Marks (Glenmoore, Pa.). Creegan scored back-to-back man-up goals to start the game and give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead mid-way through the first quarter. In the closing seconds of the opening frame, Justin Marks gathered a pass from his brother Brian Marks (Glenmoore, Pa.) for the three-goal advantage.

Stony Brook responded with a three-goal run of its own in the second quarter. Steve Conlon (Reheboth, Del.) tallied twice to trim the lead to 3-2 and Brian Abrams' man-up goal at 8:49 knotted the game at 3-3.

The Wildcats regained the lead with an unassisted goal by Brian Marks at 5:24 mark. Just 36 seconds later Matt Lucas (Gainesville, Md.) bounced a shot past the Seawolves goalie allowing the visiting Wildcats to take a 5-3 lead into intermission.

The Wildcats surged out to an 8-4 advantage four minutes into the third quarter. Justin Marks tallied his second goal of the afternoon less than a minute into the third quarter. After Stony Brook trimmed the Wildcat lead to 6-4, Dave Cacciabeve (Boonton Township, N.J.) and Creegan scored two goals less than eight seconds apart to capture its 8-4 lead.

The Stony Brook defense held the Wildcats to only one goal in the closing 26 minutes of the contest and the Seawolves offense scored five straight times, four of which came in the final period. Kevin Pall (Merrick, N.Y.), the Division I leader in goals per game, gave the Seawolves their first lead at the 10:05 mark off a feed from Scannell.

Brian Marks answered back as the Wildcats used their powerful man-up unit to capitalize on a Stony Brook penalty tying the score with 6:46 remaining.

After a late Villanova turnover, the Seawolves gained possession in the Wildcats end of the field. Scannell dodged his defender and rolled to the middle of the field firing a bounce shot that found its way over the shoulder of Wildcat goalie Sean Philbin (Annapolis, Md.) for the game-winning goal. Philbin finished the game with nine saves in 60 minutes of action.

Villanova returns home following the loss to prepare for next weekends Colonial Athletic Association showdown with No. 14 ranked Towson University. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. in Towson, Md.
