Jamaica, N.Y. - St. John's used second half goals from Ashley Kozicki and Matt Groenwald to defeat Villanova 2-0 in a Big East game played at Belson Field here on Wednesday evening. St. John's is 4-2-0 overall, 3-0-0 in the Big East while Villanova drops to 3-4-0 overall and 0-3-0 in the Big East Conference.
The first half was a story of Villanova literally weathering the Red Storm. St. John's generated nine shots in the first half to the Wildcats one. Yet thanks to some nifty defensive work and strong work by sophomore goalkeeper Craig Bald (Edgewater, Md.), the game remained scoreless at intermission.
The Red Storm found the back of the net at the 59:47 mark. Kozicki took a feed from Chris Leidner and blasted a shot to the lower near post from 16 yards out to boost St. John's to a 1-0 advantage.
At the 70:09 mark, St. John's added another goal when Groenwald took a pass from Chris Corcoran and knocked home a shot from 15 yards out. The goal was Groenwald's fourth of the 2003 campaign.
Villanova was outshot 23-2 on the night. Bald made four saves in net for the Wildcats.
Next up for Villanova is a home match this Sunday against Philadelphia Soccer Seven rival Temple at 1:00 p.m.
