Sept. 4, 2003

Box Score

VILLANOVA, PA. - On Wednesday, Sept. 3 the Villanova field hockey team defeated Lafayette for the fourth consecutive year. Junior back Vanessa Pizzulli led the 'Cats with two goals. The game-winner came from sophomore forward Rory Rogers, an unassisted goal with just six minutes remaining.

The Wildcats improved to 2-1 with the victory, while the Leoapards fell to 1-2.

Villanova got on the board first, as Pizzulli scored her first goal of the season on an assist from freshman forward Megan Foster with 27:00 remaining in the first half. It marked the first collegiate point for Foster, but not her last for the evening. Pizzulli and Foster teamed up on another goal in the second half.

Lafayette's Jennifer Stone responded to Pizzulli's initial goal by scoring one of her own just five minutes later to tie the score. It would be a recurring theme for the Leopards, as Stone matched each of Villanova's first three goals. The Lafayette standout recorded her second consecutive hat trick, giving her six goals on the season.

Senior forward Leah Lisausky scored her second goal of the season to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead at the half.

The Wildcats were able to overcome Stone's two second half goals, and took the lead for good with just six minutes remaining. Rory Rogers's unassisted goal with six minutes remaining was her second consecutive game-winner for Villanova.

Rogers made a winner out of freshman goalkeeper Erin Scott, who improved to 2-1 on the season by making five saves in her 70:00 of work. Lafayette's Casey Devlin, who made nine saves, suffered her second loss of the season.

The 'Cats won despite being outshot, 17-15. Lafayette also held a 13-9 edge in penalty corners.

Villanova is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 7. The 'Cats will travel to Newark, Del. to take on the University of Delaware Blue Hens at 1:00 p.m.
