Final Stats

Boston College dropped its first game of the year on Sunday afternoon, 2-1, to a scrappy Villanova team that put constant pressure on the No. 6 Eagles during the BIG EAST contest.

The Eagles (4-1-0, 1-1-0) and Wildcats (4-0-1, 2-0-0) played a scoreless first half, keeping the ball in the neutral third for most of the period. Both defenses played well, with BC allowing just four shots in the opening half.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, Villanova freshman Dan DeMasters(Littiz, Pa.) scored the first of two goals. After the Eagles were whistled for a foul, senior co-captain Jonathan Lopuski (Montville, N.J.) found DeMasters off of the dead ball. DeMasters beat Boston College sophomore goalkeeper Issey Maholo (Tokyo, Japan) to the left for his second goal of 2004. DeMasters scored his third goal of the season, just 12 minutes later, once again beating Maholo to the left.

Eagles' co-captain Pat Haggerty (Lawrenceville, N.J.) turned in another impressive performance, playing on both sides of the field from his backfield position. Haggerty scored in the game's last minute - his third goal of the season - to make the score 2-1.

Guy Melamed (Nofit, Israel) also played well for BC, just missing the goal on his two shot attempts. Freshman Charlie Davies (Manchester, N.H.), coming off a two-assist performance in Wednesday night's victory over Boston University, registered three shots, bringing his team-leading total to 16.

Prior to this afternoon's game, the Eagles had not been on the negative side of a score this season.

The victory was Villanova's fourth in a row. Next up for the 'Cats is a Wednesday afternoon match with Big East rival Rutgers at the Villanova Soccer Complex at 3:30 p.m.
