Wildcats Hold Off Drexel

Sept. 22, 2004

Box Score

VILLANOVA, Pa.- One goal was all Villanova (4-3) needed to defeat the Drexel Dragons (3-4) on Wednesday evening by a score of 1-0. The win gives sophomore goalie Erin Scott her second shutout of the season and fifth of her Main Line career.

The first half was scoreless, with players dividing their time on both sides of the field. Neither team had much offensive advantage over the other, nor were there many shots on goal, with both teams registering just four each. Drexel's big scoring opportunity in the first half came when Sarah Gostomski maneuvered the ball around Scott but was stopped by Simone Schunk, who came in with a defensive save to prevent the goal.

Megan Foster and Rory Rogers also had scoring opportunities denied by Drexel goalie Katie Dougherty, who effectively covered the ball with defenders Cassandra Prentiss and Elizabeth Seidel. Villanova's only goal came at the 53:28 mark when Lauren Campanelli netted the game-winner off a pass from Gina DeMaestri. It was Campanelli's third goal of the season, triple her total from a year ago.

After the goal by Campanelli, the Wildcats held off Drexel for the remaining 16:32 to seal their fourth victory of the season. In the end, the teams were dead even with both taking a total of 14 shots on goal. The strong defense on both ends helped keep the game a low-scoring one.

Villanova returns to action on Saturday when they host BIG EAST rival Rutgers. Game time is 1:00 PM.
