TAMPA, Fla. - The University of South Florida got a pair of second half goals from Simon Schoendorf to snap a 2-2 halftime tie and defeat Villanova 4-2 in a Big East men's soccer game played here tonight. USF improves to 6-3 overall and 5-0-0 in the Big East while the Wildcats drop to 4-5-1 overall and 3-2-0 in the Big East.
The game was only five minutes old when USF struck first. Jason Devenish and Blake Sharpe set up Jordan Seabrook at the 5:22 mark for his sixth goal of the season to give the Bulls a 1-0 advantage. Seabrook struck again at the 23:56 mark with his seventh goal of the season off assists from Yohance Marshall and Rodrigo Hidalgo to make it 2-0 for USF.
After USF was whistled for a foul in the box, Villanova senior Brett Stassfurth converted a penalty kick to cut the margin to 2-1. Stassfurth's second goal of the season came at the 29:22 mark.
Less than a minute later, the Wildcats drew even. Freshman Joe Taylor fed a pass to senior Charlie Rowan, who notched his fourth goal of the campaign at the 30:49 mark.
The game remained deadlocked at halftime.
USF made a strong push in the second half, out-shooting the `Cats 10-0 in the period. The Bulls got the game winning goal at 65:17 from Schoendorf with assists being awarded to Hidalgo and Neaves. Schoendorf then put the contest out of reach when he recorded another goal at 79:29, this one coming off a corner kick.
Dane Brenner made one save in picking up the win in net for USF while sophomore Jason Friel was credited with three saves for the Wildcats.
Next up for Villanova is another Big East road date, this one at Rutgers on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
