No. 16 Villanova Falls to the Orange 4-3

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The No. 16 Villanova field hockey team (11-3, 2-1 Big East) were beat by Syracuse (7-6, 2-1 Big East) Saturday night at Coyne Field 4-3. Despite holding the statistical advantage, the `Cats were unable to stop the Orange on penalty corners. Both Villanova and Syracuse are now tied for first in the Big East.

Michelle Sola was the first to attack getting on the board at 3:34 off of Syracuse's first of three penalty corners, the team would connect on all attempts. Catherine Somits (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) scored her third goal of the season just two minutes later on a shot in the circle from to tie the game up.

Megan Foster (Berlin, N.J./Bishop Eustace) then put the Wildcats ahead receiving the pass from Stephanie Campbell (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional) to find the back of the cage. This was Foster's eighteenth goal of the season to lead the team.

The Orange executed their second penalty corner of the evening at the 27 minute mark. The team took the shot and it was saved by goalkeeper, Erin Scott (Malvern, Pa./ West Chester East) but Ashley Fry found the rebound to make the score 2-2 at the half.

Syracuse registered two more goals in the second half to take the lead on the Wildcats. At 52:03 Megan Stuart got the ball in the middle of the circle and fired to put the Orange ahead. With just 4:12 left in the game, Sola scored her second goal of the night to put the nail in the coffin taking a pass from Meg Ryan off of a penalty corner.

Villanova didn't give up as Rory Rogers (Rosemont, Pa./Sacred Heart Academy) scored an unassisted goal but the time ran out for the `Cats making the final score 4-3.

Scott made one save for the night facing only six Syracuse shots, while Heather Hess got the win with eleven saves against `Nova's seventeen shots. The Wildcats also held the advantage in penalty corners 9-3.

Villanova gears up next for Duke in Durhan, N.C. on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
