After authoring one of its best defensive performances of 2004-05 against Saint Joseph's on Feb. 7, Villanova endured an uncharacteristically difficult defensive afternoon against No. 7 Syracuse on Saturday. The Orange connected on .569 of its field goal attempts and scored 90 points, both season highs for a Villanova opponent. In its last three Big East games, VU has allowed 84 ppg.
This marks the third consecutive week in which Villanova is nationally ranked. The Wildcats are listed at No. 25 in the Associated Press poll (No. 22 last week.)
Another sign of Villanova's progress can be found in this statistic: The Wildcats are 5-5 (.555) in 2004-05 in games in which they shoot 40 percent or less from the field. In the previous two seasons, Villanova was 2-18 (.100) in that circumstance.
Tonight's encounter with Bucknell is Villanova's final regular season non-conference contest. It kicks off a busy week for the `Cats, who face Seton Hall on Thursday evening in New Jersey and return to host Pittsburgh on Sunday afternoon at the Pavilion (1:30 p.m./ABC TV).
