TOP STORIES

The three point shot once again played an important role in a Villanova victory on Sunday. The Wildcats were 12-of-23 (.522) from beyond the arc in an 80-72 triumph over No. 17 Pittsburgh. Villanova is 11-1 in 2004-05 in games in which it connects on 40 percent or more of its field goal attempts. The only loss came to Boston College on Jan. 19 (6-of-15, .400). In games when it makes at least 10 threes, VU is 8-0.

This marks the fourth consecutive week in which Villanova is nationally ranked. The Wildcats are listed at No. 23 in the Associated Press poll (No. 25 last week) and No. 24 in the ESPN/USA Today poll.

Junior forward Curtis Sumpter enters play against Boston College with 993 career points. He is on target to become the third Wildcats to join the 1,000- point fraternity in 2004-05 (Allan Ray and Randy Foye are the others) and 47th in school history. Sumpter also shared Big East player of the week honors this week with Connecticut's Charlie Villanueva.

Next up for Villanova is a visit to Georgetown. On Jan. 15, the Hoyas picked up a 66-64 win over the `Cats at the Pavilion. The contest is scheduled for Sunday at noon and will be televised locally by WB17.
