VILLANOVA, Pa. - Sophomore Eric Heidenberger (Chevy Chase, Md.) scored a clutch goal to break a 6-6 tie and give the Wildcats a permanent lead as Villanova (2-1) rallied from three goals down to defeat Penn, 10-7, Saturday afternoon at Villanova Stadium.
Penn (0-1) leapt out to a 6-3 lead by the third quarter, scoring four in a row, with two of the goals coming from sophomore midfielder David Cornbrooks. The Quakers had an answer to every Villanova goal and were able to tie the `Cats, 3-3, with 7:10 remaining in the second quarter.
The Wildcats scored the first goal of the afternoon, an unassisted score from sophomore Paul Genovese (Huntington, N.Y.), with 9:38 to go in the first quarter. Creegan's goal came with 12:50 remaining in the second quarter.
Penn tied the game once again with a goal from David Andrzejewski less than one minute later, with 12:03 to go in the half. The Quakers took over offensively for a short period, scoring four goals in a row to lead 6-3 with 8:21 remaining in the third quarter.
Villanova would then score seven of its own to take a 10-6 lead with 3:05 remaining in the contest. Heidenberger scored the fourth and fifth goals in that series that would put the `Cats ahead for good and secure their second win of the season.
Penn's last goal came from Andrzejewski with 2:54 remaining to bring the Quakers within three, but Villanova was able to avoid a late rally by Penn and emerged the winner.
