Final Stats
VILLANOVA, Pa . -- Sophomore Becky Gardner (Centerport, N.Y.) scored three goals in less than three minutes to help Villanova rally from five goals down, but the Wildcats (0-2) were unable to capture the win as they fell to Marist (1-0), 10-8, Saturday afternoon at Villanova Stadium.
The Red Foxes scored eight goals in the first half to jump out to an 8-2 lead. Gardner scored just over two minutes into the first half before Marist would score three of its own to take a 3-1 lead. Junior Cindy Koza (Thornton, Pa.) put the Wildcats back within one when she scored off an assist from sophomore Jamie Schneider (Salisbury, Md.) with 21:29 remaining in the half.
Marist then scored five goals in a row before Gardner found an answer for Marist and scored an unassisted goal with 24:15 left in the contest. After another goal from the Red Foxes, Koza added her second goal of the afternoon to bring the score to 9-4. Gardner scored next with 15:18 to go in the game to pull Villanova within four goals.
With under three minutes remaining in the game, and after Marist had added its final goal of the afternoon, Gardner scored three in a row to help switch the momentum on the field, but Villanova's rally fell short and Marist preserved its first win of the season during its first game of the season.
Villanova returns to action on Sunday afternoon when it hosts Colgate at 1 p.m.
