April 27, 2005

Final Stats

Philadelphia, Pa. - Drexel's attack scored 10-straight goals in the first 16 minutes of play, leading the Dragons to a 17-2 non-conference win over the Villanova Wildcats at Vidas Field. Villanova completes its season with a 2-13 record.

Sophomore Emily Hoesch (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) scored four goals on four shots, while senior Kristen Urian (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) held the Villanova Wildcats (2-13) to only one goal in her last appearance in cage as a Drexel Dragon. Drexel ends its season 12-5, tying the record for most wins in a single season, set in 1993. The Dragons finished with a 2-5 conference record.

Hoesch grabbed the first draw and raced down field to assist a Nicole Adams (Jackson, N.J./Jackson) goal in the first 10 seconds of the game. Adams kept the scoring going, sending the ball to senior Jennifer Bonini (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) to wail one past Villanova's keeper Jessica Brozena. Eight more Dragon goals followed, four from Hoesch and others coming from Kerry Kelly (Roseland, N.J./West Essex), Colleen Rocks (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Twp.) and Sarah Carter (Columbia, Md./Long Reach).

Villanova's Molly Grace found Tricia Magnuson inside to fire one past Urian, to put the `Cats on the board. Villanova battled back, holding the Dragons scoreless until Caterina Carafides (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) was sent to the eight-meter arc to net a free position attempt. Drexel scored two more before the half with goals coming from two freshman, Kaitlin Keegan (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) and Jessica Bill (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W.Baker). Drexel held a 10-5 draw control advantage in the first stanza, with four coming from Hoesch. The Dragons took a 13-1 lead into the half.

The second half featured four more Drexel goals. Adams and Rocks opened with back-to-back unassisted goals. Hoesch found Adams again to put the Dragons up 16-1 before the Wildcats' Jamie Schneider assisted a Kathleen Kelly tally to put Villanova back on the board. The final goal of the day was scored by senior Elisabeth Bembridge (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee), coming off an assist from classmate Bonini in the last seven minutes of their Dragon careers.

The third senior Dragon, Urian, made seven saves and grabbed two groundballs in 43 minutes between the pipes. Sophomore Katherine Klausner (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) made one save in relief of Urian. Villanova's starter Brozena stopped six shots, while freshman Wildcat Lauren Latchford saved five in 45 minutes.
