VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova junior forward Jason Fraser (Amityville, N.Y./Amityville High School) underwent successful microfracture surgery yesterday on both his right and left knees. The surgery was performed at Bryn Mawr Hospital by Dr. Kevin Freedman and Villanova Team Surgeon Dr. Rob Good. It is anticipated that Fraser will be unable to participate in basketball activities for a period of four months at which time his condition will be re-evaluated.
Wednesday's procedure was aimed at relieving the swelling and pain in his knees that has plagued Fraser throughout his three seasons on the Main Line. According to Good, the microfracture procedure is used in an effort to stimulate cartilage growth by punching tiny holes in the bone.
"The operation went very well," stated Good. "The recovery period all depends on how Jason heals. We are hopeful he will show improvement over the course of the summer. We will monitor his situation as he rehabilitates the knees over the next few months."
This marks Fraser's seventh surgical procedure in his three years at Villanova and the second time he has undergone double knee surgery. The first took place in April of 2003 when surgeons attempted to alleviate chronic tendonitis. Last week, Fraser underwent surgery for a second time on the right hand he injured in a game at Providence on Jan. 11.
"Jason has gone through more injuries than any player we have ever coached," stated Villanova head coach Jay Wright. "He has a great reservoir of faith and mental toughness. We are confident he will come back strong from this."
