VILLANOVA- Pa. - The Villanova field hockey squad (2-0) registered its first win of the season in front of the home crowd with a victory over Bucknell (0-3) Friday night. The Wildcats used a shot advantage of 32-15 to outscore the Bison 3-1. Three separate Villanova players accounted for the goals showcasing the team's numerous offensive threats.
Lauren Campanelli (2) was the first player to find the back of the net, scoring a goal at 8:23. Rory Rogers positioned herself inside the circle and tapped it to Campanelli who beat the keeper for the score. But Bucknell answered back two minutes later when Kelly O'Brien took advantage of a scramble to slide the ball past `Nova keeper, Erin Scott, to make it 1-1.
In the second half it was all Villanova on the offensive end. Seeing goalkeeper, Liz Jordan, out of the net, Rogers blasted the ball through a crowd from five yards out at 9:50 to score the game winning goal and bring her up to two goals and three assists on the season.
Junior Megan Foster finished off the scoring for Villanova in 27th minute off of a restart from Stephanie Campbell. Foster leads the team in goals on the season with a total of three in two games played. Head Coach Joanie Q. Milhous credited the win to a great team effort, highlighted by outstanding play from Rogers, freshmen Sam Coveleski, and defensive back Sarah Way.
While the Bison couldn't overcome the large shot deficit, they did have the advantage in the net with Bucknell making fourteen saves and Villanova six. The Wildcats had many opportunities to capitalize on penalties taking 9 penalty corners to Bucknell's two.
Villanova begins a three-game road trip at Drexel next Wednesday, but will return home the following week to play West Chester on September 14 at 7 p.m.
