VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova softball team garnered two wins, Sunday, on the opening weekend of the fall season. `Nova beat Wagner 9-6 in the first game and 7-3 in the second. Riding a big inning at the plate in each game, the `Cats were able to start off 2-0 for the fall.
Villanova began its high-scoring day with two runs in the second inning. Freshman Natalie Hord got on base in a hustle play taking advantage of a Seahawk error and would later come around to score off of Greta Holmgren's RBI double to center field.
The Wildcats later exploded in the 6th inning with seven runs. Jackie Dempsey, Lauren Peterson, Cassie Koenig, and Lisa Curran all registered hits in the inning. Hord and Carolyn Brown both doubled to drive in four runs between the two players.
Pitching for the `Cats were Kat Walsh and freshman Megan Hord. Jessica Curtis and Lauren Peterson also added to the strong defensive effort.
The second game began like the first as Jackie Dempsey got to first on a Wagner error. Freshman, Meghan Morese, tallied the RBI hitting in Dempsey to make the score 1-0.
The Wildcats found their momentum in the third. Koenig hit a double to drive in two runs and hit the plate off of Morese's single. Holmgren and Curran got on base when Tessa Paolini ripped her first of two doubles on the day to accumulate two RBI.
Freshman Laura Determan started at pitcher for the team and allowed one run in her first collegiate performance.
Villanova will take the field again next Saturday when they travel to Allentown, PA for the Carol Weil Tournament. Directions are available on the schedule page at www.villanova.com.
