LEWISBURG, Pa. - Villanova (12-7) held a 13-6 shot advantage on Wednesday evening, but the defense and goalkeeping of Bucknell (7-8) held the Wildcats off the scoreboard in a 2-0 loss at Graham Field. Senior forward Megan Foster (Berlin, N.J.) had seven shots to just six for the Bison but Villanova was shut out for the first time in 19 games this season.
After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Wildcats outshot Bucknell 7-2 in the second half in trying for an equalizer. However, the Bison got an insurance goal in the 56th minute and held off the Villanova offense to secure the victory.
Emily Groendyke had 10 saves in goal for Bucknell, stopping five shots in each half for her second shutout of the season.
Early in the game, the Bison were awarded a penalty stroke in the 13th minute and Emily Hutchison converted to give Bucknell an early advantage. Each of the Bison shots in the second half came on the same series. Katie Urosevich took a shot that hit off the post and then passed the rebound to Chyncia Smith, who scored to make it a 2-0 game.
Senior goalkeeper Alex Whalen (Basking Ridge, N.J.) had two saves for Villanova.
The Wildcats will head to Georgetown this Friday at 3 p.m. for its final game and final conference matchup of the regular season.
Villanova has clinched a spot in the four-team BIG EAST Tournament that begins next month. The Wildcats can be either the #3 seed or the #4 seed in the tournament, which is being hosted by Louisville.
NOTES: Earlier this week the Wildcats learned that seniors Foster and midfielder Lauren Campanelli (Langhorne, Pa.) had been selected to play in the NFHCA Senior All-Star Game. The game will be held at Wake Forest University on November 18.
