STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut scored twice in the final 11 minutes of regulation to rally for a 2-1 victory over the Villanova Wildcats in a BIG EAST Conference soccer match played here before a crowd of 3,016 on a sunny afternoon. With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 3-3-1 overall, 0-2-0 BIG EAST.
Junior Farris Fakhoury (Parlin, N.J.) staked Villanova to the lead when he beat Husky goalie Matt Sangeloty at the 16:03 mark. It was Fakhoury's second goal of the campaign and held up for the duration of the first half.
Villanova had a chance to extend its lead early in the second half when junior Mike Del Guercio (Chatham, N.J.) sent a shot towards the net that hit the post. And freshman Mike Seamon (Rahway, N.J.) was a threat all day, generating four of the `Cats six shots on goal for the match.
UConn finally broke through against the Wildcats at 79:12 when O'Brian White netted his second goal of the season. Stanley Ford was credited with an assist on the score that knotted the game.
Less than four minutes later came a pivotal play. The Huskies' Karl Schilling was awarded a penalty kick at the 83:00 mark and did not waste the opportunity. His shot beat Wildcat goalkeeper Jason Friel (Dublin, Pa.) and UConn had its first lead of the day
Connecticut owned a 10-9 advantage in shots on the day. Sangeloty made five saves for UConn while Friel picked up two saves in the Villanova net.
The Wildcats will look to rebound when they return to the pitch this Friday for their BIG EAST home opener at the Villanova Soccer Complex against Georgetown at noon. Seton Hall then follows the Hoyas to West Campus for a Sunday dual that gets underway at 1:00 p.m.
