Stadler Leads Wildcats at Georgetown Hoya Invitational

VILLANOVA, Pa.-- Junior co-captain Doug Stadler (Wexford, Pa.) played even-par golf through the first two rounds and wound up in a tie for 22nd place in the field on Monday and Tuesday at the Georgetown Hoya Invitational. Villanova placed 11th out of 12 teams in the tournament and finished with a 54-hole score of 918 (310-299-309).

The first 36 holes of the tournament were played on Monday and Stadler opened the event with a round of 72 (+1) at the Members Club at Four Streams. He came back to card a 70 later in the day and sit at even par entering the final 18 holes on Tuesday morning.

Stadler finished the tournament with a combined score of 222 (+9) after recording an 80 on Tuesday at the par-71 course which measured 7,102 yards for the tournament. He placed 22nd in the field and was followed by sophomore Michael Gross (Clarks Green, Pa.). Gross tallied scores of 76-73=149 (+7) on Monday and came back with a 79 on Tuesday to finish with a total of 228 and tie for 37th place. The round of 73 on Monday's second 18 holes was a collegiate best for Gross.

The Wildcats top scorer on Tuesday was freshman Colin List (Boynton Beach, Fla.), who matched his best round of the season with a 74 (+3). List had carded rounds of 81 and 75 on Monday and finished in 42nd place with a tournament total of 230.

Juniors Bill Gropp (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and Paul Sjoberg (Thief River Falls, Minn.) placed in a tie for 61st and 63rd place, respectively, in the field of 65 golfers. Gropp registered scores of 81-89-76=246 and Sjoberg posted marks of 85-81-81=247.

Villanova opened the tournament with a team score of 310 in Monday's first round but came back with a 299 in the second round thanks to scores of 75 or better from Stadler, Gross and List. The Wildcats then had a team score of 309 to finish the event on Tuesday.

BIG EAST member DePaul claimed team title honors with a score of 850 (-2) that was four strokes better than Richmond (854). St. John's (862) rounded out the top three and tournament host Georgetown finished sixth.

Gropp had one of 14 eagles in the tournament and the lone eagle for the Wildcats during the tournament. Villanova was tied for sixth in the field with a 3.38 scoring average on the par-3 holes.

The Wildcats end their fall season next week at the BIG EAST/MAC Challenge in Winter Garden, Fla. The two-day tournament will be contested on the Crooked Cat course at Orange County National.
