Aug. 31, 2007

Box Score

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Delano Pierre scored two goals in the first 22 minutes to lead the Richmond men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory Friday over Villanova in front of a raucous opening night crowd of 2,432 at First Market Stadium.

Pierre opened the scoring in the 16th minute when he took a pass from Kyle Richards and beat the keeper in the upper right corner of the net. Just over five minutes later Pierre scored his sixth-career goal on assists from senior Callum Thomas and junior Scott Loesser to put the Spiders up 2-0.

It marked Pierre's second multi-goal game of his career, along with scoring twice against Temple last season.

Villanova did not let the two goal lead last for long, as freshman Sean Mergenthal slid a shot inside the right post off an assist from Joe Taylor on a restart just 1:53 after Pierre's second goal. It was the first goal of Mergenthal's college career.

The score would remain 2-1 as Sciocchetti, the 2006 Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year, would make six saves on the night.

The two teams each took 11 shots. Villanova keeper Jason Friel made three saves.

Villanova will be on the field at the Soccer Complex for its home opener on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m.
