Round 1 Results
SUNSET BEACH, N.C. - Juniors Brett Bergman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Doug Stadler (Wexford, Pa.) each posted rounds of 71 (-1) on Friday as Villanova opened play at the Sea Trail Invitational hosted by Elon University. The Wildcats finished with a team score of 297 on the first of three days of competition and are currently in 14th place out of 19 teams.
Bergman and Stadler are tied for 18th place in a field of 99 golfers. Stadler's 34 on the front nine marked the lowest nine-hole score of the day for the Wildcats. Bergman shot 36 over the first half of his round and came back with a 35 on the back nine.
Freshman Connor Casey (Madison, N.J.) carded a 76 for the day and is currently tied for 68th place. He was followed by junior Bill Gropp (Bryn Mawr, N.J.) with a 79 (T-87th) and junior Andrew Alexander (Rochester, Minn.) with an 81 (T-93rd).
This weekend's tournament is being played at the par-72, 6,761-yard course at Sunset Beach. Villanova's team score of 297 was just nine strokes over par. Tournament host Elon finished with a team score of 279 and has a one-stroke lead over Bethune-Cookman (280) atop the team standings. Steve Dressel of Elon is the current individual leader after posting a score of 67 (-5) on Friday.
The teams will continue the tournament with the second day of competition on Saturday. Tee times begin at 8:00 a.m. A full recap of Saturday's action will be available early Saturday evening.
