Bergman Leads Wildcats on Second Day of Sea Trail Invitational

SUNSET BEACH, N.C.-- On a day filled with good weather and low scores at the Sunset Beach course, Villanova improved six strokes from the opening round with a team score of 291 (+3) on the second day of play at the Sea Trail Invitational. Junior Brett Bergman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) is currently tied for 15th place in a field of 99 golfers after turning in his second straight round with a score below par.

Bergman and freshman Connor Casey (Madison, N.J.) each shot a 1-under-par 71 in Saturday's round. The round marked the first under par and the lowest score for Casey in his young collegiate career and moved him into a tie for 54th place (76-71=147, +3) individually in the field. Meanwhile, Bergman's combined two-round score of 71-71=142 (-2) has him just six strokes off the overall lead and three strokes out of the top-10.

All four of the Wildcat counting scores on Saturday were a 75 or better at the par-72, 6,761-yard course. Junior co-captain Doug Stadler (Wexford, Pa.) carded a 75 and is tied for 46th in the individual standings with a two-day total of 71-75=146 (+2). The final counting score for Villanova in the second round came from junior Bill Gropp (Bryn Mawr, Pa.). Gropp came in with a round of 74 and is tied for 78th in the field (79-74=153, +9).

Junior co-captain Andrew Alexander (Rochester, Minn.) rounded out the Wildcat scores with a round of 82 on Saturday.

This weekend's tournament in Sunset Beach is being hosted by Elon, which currently owns a 13-stroke lead atop the team standings. Elon recorded a team score of 273 today and stands at 24-below par through two rounds. Villanova will have an opportunity to move up in the standings during the final 18 holes on Sunday. The Wildcats are currently in 15th place but trail 10th-place Delaware by a mere 10 strokes.

Mike McKenzie of Wofford and Josh Gallman of South Carolina-Upstate are tied for the individual lead with combined two round scores of 136 (-8). McKenzie and Casey Johnson (Appalachian State) led all players on Saturday by shooting rounds of 65 (-7).

The final round of play gets underway on Sunday morning with tee times beginning at 8 a.m.
