Syracuse, N.Y. - Villanova (11-6, 2-3 Big East) was defeated by No. 3 Syracuse (16-1, 4-1 Big East) by a score of 5-0 Friday. Unable to generate offence against the Orange, the Wildcats were held scoreless only taking three shots in the game.
Syracuse jumped out to an early lead with an unassisted goal from Shannon Taylor 5:41 into the game.
Taylor struck again at the 17:12 mark on assists from Martina Loncarica and Maggie Befort past sophomore goalkeeper Maura McCormick (Forty Fort, Pa.).
To put Syracuse up 3-0, Lindsey Conrad scored an unassisted goal in 26th minute for her 14th goal of the season.
With time winding down in the first half, Martina Loncarica had a chance to put the Orange further ahead on a penalty stroke. With an excellent save by McCormick, the game was remained 3-0 at the half.
Syracuse connected for their fourth goal of the game less than two minutes into the second half. Conrad had her second goal of the contest with an assist to Taylor.
To go up 5-0, Taylor had her third goal at the 50:04 mark. Taylor now leads the BIG EAST with 25 goals this season.
Villanova was unable to get into a rhythm against the Orange as they were held without a shot in the first half and took three in the second.
Sophomores Dana Ramsden (Woolwich Twp., N.J.) and Meredith Sabatini (Haddonfield, N.J.) each had shots on goal for Villanova but were unable to get the ball past Syracuse goalkeeper Heather Hess.
The Wildcats allowed a season high five goals in the game as the Orange took 30 shots, 10 by Taylor. There was also a large differential in the amount of on penalty corners taken by each team as Villanova had two compared to 21 by Syracuse.
McCormick recorded eight saves in the contest to bring her season total to 83. She and the Wildcat defense have only allowed 24 goals this season in 17 games.
Tonight's game was the fourth time this season that Villanova has played a top 20 team of which they have a record of 1-3.
The game marked the 23rd time these two teams met as Syracuse now leads the series 7-16.
Villanova will head to Philadelphia on Wednesday October 29th for a matchup against St. Joe's. The game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
