Wildcats Finish Big East Championship in 11th Place

HEBRON, Ky. - In the final round of the BIG EAST Championship on Tuesday morning, Villanova shot a team round of 317 and finished in 11th place out of 12 teams at the conference tournament. The Wildcats finished the 54-hole event with a team score of 305-298-317=920 (+56). Individually, junior Brett Bergman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished in a tie for 18th place in the field of 60 golfers with a combined score of 73-74-77=224 (+8).

After having at least a share of the low team score in each of the first two rounds of the championship, Bergman was one stroke off the low Villanova round on Tuesday. Freshman Conor Casey (Madison, N.J.) carded a 76 to lead the Wildcats in the third round of play at Traditions Golf Club.

Bergman and Casey finished just one stroke apart as Villanova's top two performers at the tournament. Casey finished with rounds of 75-74-76=225 and tied for 25th place in the field. Fellow freshman Colin List (Boynton Beach, Fla.) tied for 36th place with a three-round total of 232 (+16). List posted a score of 81 in Tuesday's final round and finished 76-75-81=232.

Juniors Andrew Alexander (Rochester, Minn.) and Doug Stadler (Wexford, Pa.) registered scores of 83 and 86, respectively, in the final round and each tied for 58th place in the individual standings. Both had combined totals of 242 (+26) in the tournament. Alexander posted scores of 82-77-83 and Stadler had rounds of 81-75-86.

Stadler, Casey, Alexander and Bergman each registered a birdie during their rounds on Tuesday. The Wildcats were paired with DePaul and Cincinnati in the final round and teed off at the 10th hole. Casey made the turn at 39 before going just one over par on the front nine to complete his day. He birdied the par-3 eighth hole.

In the team standings, Marquette narrowly held on to its lead despite a strong push from Louisville in the final round. The Golden Eagles finished with a three-day total of 874 and defeated the Cardinals by two strokes for the team title. Marquette started the day with an 11-stroke lead over Louisville but the Cardinals posted a team score of 286 in the final round, while the Golden Eagles shot a 295.

Ted Gray of Marquette also held on to a lead in the final round and won the individual title by five strokes over St. John's Keegan Bradley. Gray was the lone player in the field to shoot under par for the tournament and finished at 68-68-75=211 (-5).

The BIG EAST Championship was contested this week at Traditions Golf Club, a par-72 format that measured 7,103 yards for the tournament.

This week's conference championship wraps up the spring season for the Wildcats.
