Sept. 12, 2008

Final Stats

Villanova, Pa. - The Wildcats (5-1) recorded their fifth shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over Brown (1-2) Friday at Villanova Stadium. Sophomore Lauren Wuzzardo (Bridgeton, N.J.) had the only goal in the defensive battle to give the Villanova the win.

Wuzzardo, recording her third goal of the season, scored 32:25 into the game. She took a shot from the top of the circle that flew past the Brown defense to put Villanova up 1-0 at the half.

The Wildcats had a couple of opportunities to score in the second half including a blast from Sophomore Dana Ramsden (Woolwich Twp., N.J.) on a pass from Wuzzardo, but were unable to register another goal. The single score proved to be enough to give Villanova the win.

For the fifth time this season, the Villanova defense and sophomore Goalkeeper Maura McCormick (Forty Fort, Pa.) held their opponents scoreless. McCormick had a season high eight saves on the 13 shots by Brown.

The Bears goalie Lauren Kessler had eight saves in the game and Katie Hyland led Brown with five shots and three shots on goal.

Tonight's meeting was the first ever for the two teams.

The Villanova defense is off to a fantastic start this season allowing only three goals in their first six games. The Wildcats have only allowed 47 shots, compared to their 76, keeping opposing offences away from McCormick who has 26 saves and a goal against average of 0.64 on the season.

Up next, the Wildcats will take on Missouri State on Sunday September 14th at Villanova Stadium at Noon.
