WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Villanova field hockey team (8-5, 2-2 BIG EAST) defeated the Georgetown Hoyas 5-0 on Friday afternoon on the American University campus. In the cold and rainy conditions, senior Emily Donaldson and junior Dana Ramsden each netted two goals while junior Lauren Wuzzardo provided the Wildcats with two assists en route to the BIG EAST victory.
The Wildcats capitalized in the 15th minute when junior Sam Haas scored on a breakaway to beat Hoya goalie Clodagh Coghlan on the left side of the post. To end the first half, Emily Donaldson and Lauren Wuzzardo recorded both their assists and goals in the 19th and 27th minutes to send the Wildcats into halftime with a 3-0 lead.
To begin the next 35 minutes, Dana Ramsden netted her first goal of the game off a pass from Meghan Ryan in the 45th minute. Ramsden's second goal came off an Amy Jackson assist in the 52nd minute; the score was enough to seal the win and give the Wildcats their second shutout victory of the 2009 season.
VU outshot the Hoyas by an 18-6 margin and also held a 15-8 corner advantage in the victory. Sophomore goalie Megan Goelz played 70 minutes in cage for the Wildcats and made 3 saves in the win. Georgetown's Clodagh Coghlan recorded 8 saves while Briana Pereira added one of her own in the loss.
The Wildcats are back in action on Sunday, Oct. 18th when they take on the Drexel Dragons in Philadelphia, Pa. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
