PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Villanova field hockey team (8-6, 2-2 BIG EAST) fell to city rival No. 12 Drexel, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at Buckley Field in Philadelphia, Pa. Juniors Meredith Sabatini and Dana Ramsden recorded goals for the Wildcats.
To begin the game, Villanova took the early 1-0 lead after Sabatini found a lapse in the Dragon defense and took a breakaway towards goal in the 16th minute. The advantage was short lived when Drexel was quick to recover two minutes later when Jordan Freese capitalized off a corner opportunity for the Dragons.
It only took the Wildcats less than a minute to regain the lead when Dana Ramsden deflected an Emily Donaldson pass sent from the right side of the circle. The score once again gave VU the lead, 2-1.
Drexel finished the half with two more goals; one in the 30th minute off a penalty corner scored by Jennifer Bolger and assisted by Jordan Freese and Carolina Gibernau , and the other coming at the close of the half when Christina Mastropaolo recovered a rebounded ball to put it past VU goalie Megan Goelz. At the end of the first 35, the Dragons held a 3-2 advantage over the Wildcats.
The second half favored Drexel as they held a shot advantage by a 9-3 margin and a corner advantage by 5-3. Amanda Fleischut scored in the 40th minute off an unassisted play and Drexel capitalized once again in the 50th minute when Susan Ciufo scored off a centered pass from Carolina Gibernau. The two goals of the second half were enough to push Drexel ahead of Villanova for a final score of 5-2.
Villanova goalies Megan Goelz and Maura McCormick split time in cage and combined for 8 saves for the day. Drexel keeper Jenna Phillips had 1 save in the win.
