Final Stats
Villanova, Pa. - The Wildcats won their first Colonial Athletic Association game Saturday in exciting fashion. Villanova (6-1, 1-0 CAA) held off Delaware (2-6, 0-1 CAA) in the final seconds for the 5-4 victory. Senior goalkeeper Andrew DiLoreto (Wilton, Conn.) led the Wildcat defense and recorded 10 saves and earned his sixth win of the season.
Villanova started the night off strong scoring the first three goals of the game. Sophomore Chris Aitken (Haverford, Pa.) notched two of the goals bringing his season total to five. Senior Tim Driscoll (Montville, N.J.), who leads Villanova with 14 goals, also recorded a goal with an assist by senior Chris MacDonald (Westfield, N.J.).
The Blue Hens answered with a goal from Phil Rollins with 3:18 remaining in the half to make the score 3-1.
Villanova Senior Matthew Fritts (Dallas, Tex.) opened the third quarter notching a goal at the 12:22 mark. The goal was Fritts' ninth of 2009.
Delaware looked to rally, scoring with 7:26 remaining in the third quarter. The goal by Curtis Dickson made this his 34th consecutive game with a point and brought the Blue Hens within two.
Lengthening their lead, Villanova received a goal from senior Tim Langan (Madison, N.J.). Langan's goal came with 3:09 remaining in the third quarter giving the Wildcats a three goal edge entering the final quarter.
With 14:00 minutes remaining in the game, the Blue Hens received a goal to keep their comeback hopes alive. Another goal with 3:55 left in the contest left Delaware down 5-4. With pressure on, the Villanova defense was able to keep the Blue Hens out of the net and hold on to win. The victory put the Wildcats at 6-1 for the first time since 2004.
The Wildcats now lead the series between the two teams 5-4 after dropping their last three contests. Villanova takes the field next Saturday March 28th when they go on the road to take on Sacred Heart.
