Final Stats
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior Meredith Sabatini (Haddonfield, N.J.) scored the first goal of the game in the 40th minute, but it wasn't enough to give Villanova (5-9 overall, 1-3 BIG EAST) the win over Indiana (9-5 overall, 1-3 Big-10) on Sunday afternoon, falling 2-1 in Bloomington.
The first half of play held steady, with both teams fighting for an advantage throughout the first 35 minutes. Without a score being credited to either team, VU and IU posted identical statistics with seven shots, two corners and four saves credited to each side at the end of the first half.
The second stanza provided plenty of action early on, with Villanova claiming the first goal of the game at the 40:55 mark when Sabatini netted an unassisted play on a rebound, her fourth score of the season.
Although the Wildcats were first to get on the scoreboard, Indiana found the net just three minutes later when Kelsey Kiper and Brenna Moeljadi connected for the equalizer to the left post of the cage, tying the game at 1-1.
Just two minutes after the first Indiana goal, IU's Shareyna Chang scored off a set piece from a penalty corner, giving the Hoosiers a 2-1 edge on their home field.
Despite having a 3-1 shot advantage in the last 22 minutes of play, it wasn't enough for Villanova to pull out the victory on IU's Hockey Field, dropping their second game of the weekend.
Defensively, IU keeper Becky Pany recorded five saves in the victory while Villanova's Megan Goelz stopped six in the defeat.
The Wildcats return to Villanova Stadium for their last home game of the 2010 season on Friday, Oct. 22nd at 7 p.m. versus Georgetown. Villanova Field Hockey will recognize Senior Night for seven upperclassmen that evening for their contributions to the program over the last four years.
