SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse Orange got six goals from Halley Quillinan and three from Tegan Brown en route to an 18-3 victory over Villanova in a BIG EAST women's lacrosse match played here on Sunday afternoon. The loss dropped Villanova to 7-6 overall, 0-5 in the BIG EAST while the Orange improved to a 9-4 overall record, 4-1 in the BIG EAST.
Junior Rachel Lasda and senior Erica Rybinski, both of whom hail from central New York State, accounted for all three Wildcat scores on the day. Lasda (Camilus, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals while Rybinski (Manlius, N.Y.) added another.
Quillinan scored the game's first two goals in the first three minutes of action to stake Syracuse to the early lead. Brown scored to make it 3-0 before Quillinan struck again at 23:34 to make it a four goal lead for the Orange.
Lasda converted a free position attempt at 18:58 to cut the margin to 4-1. However, the Orange reeled off the final seven goals of the half, including a pair from Quillinan, to build an 11-1 lead at halftime.
The Orange stayed in control for the duration of the final 30 minutes. Rybinski's unassisted goal at 16:25 and Lasda's goal off another free position attempt at 2:02 were the Villanova scores in the period.
All three Wildcat goalies - Maggie Langan (eight saves), Cassie Eure (one save) and Amanda Hirschfeld - saw action in net. Liz Hogan made 16 saves in goal for the Orange. Syracuse owned a 34-25 advantage in shots and a 14-10 edge in ground balls.
Villanova plays its final BIG EAST regular season road game next Saturday at Loyola at 1:00 p.m.
