WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The Villanova field hockey team (0-3) was defeated in their first contest of the 5th Annual Vonnie Gros Classic, falling to the No. 1 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels (4-0) 7-1 at West Chester University. Junior goalkeeper Megan Goelz (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) made 11 saves on the day while senior Dana Ramsden (Woolwich Township, N.J./Kingsway Regional) scored the lone Villanova goal.
The Wildcats got off to a fast start and nearly posted the first goal of the day just two minutes into the contest, but the score was waived off by officials.
North Carolina secured the goal off their second penalty corner at the 9:30 mark when Megan Dawson found the back of the cage from Teryn Brill and Katie Ardrey. The Tar Heels netted a second goal in the same fashion from Caitlin Van Sickle just three minutes later.
Rounding out the first half, UNC's Elizabeth Drazdowski and Kelsey Kolojejchick secured the final two goals of the first stanza off an unassisted play and a penalty stroke, respectively. Going into halftime, UNC led the Wildcats, 4-0.
Villanova got on the board during the second 35 when junior Jordan Lynn (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) and senior Abby Sordoni (Shavertown, Pa./Wyoming Seminary Prep) connected with Ramsden off a corner opportunity . The tally would stand as the only VU score on the day.
Rounding out the second half, North Carolina's Jen Slocum, Jaclyn Radvany and Van Sickle tallied three goals in favor of the Tar Heels, securing the win at 7-1.
Villanova will conclude their participation in the Vonnie Gros Classic on Sunday afternoon when they take on the Columbia Lions for the first-ever matchup between the two institutions. Game time is slated for 2:30 p.m. on the WCU campus.
