Oct. 21, 2011

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Villanova (7-9, 3-2) moved one step closer to securing a berth in the BIG EAST conference tournament with a 2-0 shutout victory over conference opponent, Georgetown (2-14, 0-5). Freshman Lauren Wilson (Hummelstown, Pa.) and junior Amy Jackson(Columbia, Pa.) were the goal scorers for Villanova on the afternoon.

Lauren Wilson got Villanova on the board in the 14th minute on an assist from freshman Jessica Swoboda(Hanover Township, Pa.) when the Georgetown goalie came out of the net. Wilson got the ball and put it past the out of position goal tender for the 1-0 Villanova lead that they would not relinquish. It was Wilson's fifth goal of the season, which puts her second on the team, along with her 13 points. It was Swoboda's team-leading seventh assist of the season and 21st point. Swoboda is among the league leaders in points per contest.

Through the end of the first half and early into the second half, the Villanova defense was dominant in not letting Georgetown produce any quality scoring chances, which allowed the Wildcats to add to their lead.

The Wildcats added an insurance goal late in the 56th minute on a breakaway from one of their team captains junior Amy Jackson. Jackson scored on the breakaway after the goalie came out to cut off the angle, but the junior put the ball past her for a 2-0 Wildcat advantage, which is how the game would end. Freshman Leah High (Green Lane, Pa.) recorded the assist on the play.

Villanova's defense was outstanding throughout the entire contest as they did not allow a single shot on goal in helping senior Megan Goelz(Yardley, Pa.) produce her first shutout of the season.

The Wildcats dominated all facets of the game as they outshot the Hoyas 15-5 and had eight shots on goal to Georgetown's zero.

Villanova is now in prime position to head to the BIG EAST tournament for the first time since 2006 as they sit in third place in the conference with their 3-2 record.

Villanova will have a week until their next game. The Wildcats will take on Syracuse at 4 pm at Villanova Stadium for Senior Day and the final BIG EAST regular season contest of the season.
