VILLANOVA, Pa.--Senior student-athlete Sheila Reid (Newmarket, Ont.) of the women's cross country and track & field teams was recognized at halftime of last Saturday's football game against William & Mary, where she was presented with the Honda Sports Award for track & field that she won for her efforts during the 2011 indoor and outdoor track seasons. On hand to present her with the award was Tom Peyton from American Honda.
During the 2010-11 academic year Reid was a rare double winner of the Honda Sports Award, as she also won the cross country award last fall. Peyton was on hand at a Villanova basketball game in February To present Reid with the first of her awards. Reid was also selected as a Top 3 finalist for the overall Honda-Broderick Cup for her incredible performances over the past year.
At the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships last spring Reid became the first woman in history to win a national championship in both the 1500 meters and the 5000 meters in the same year. She also anchored the Wildcats to a national title in the distance medley relay indoors, and was the individual national champion in cross country, where she led Villanova to its second straight team title.
Reid is a four-time national champion, 10-time All-American and 11-time BIG EAST champion who has remaining collegiate eligibility this year in cross country and outdoor track. She is only the third person ever to win the Honda Sports Award for both cross country and track & field in the same year.
Outside of competition Reid has been just as successful academically at Villanova as an English and Communications double major. She was named a Capital One Academic All-America first team selection last year and was the National Student-Athlete of the Year in both cross country and outdoor track, as chosen by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Reid is a four-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star and for the Fall 2011 semester when she won the individual cross country championship also achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Reid was named the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Performer of the Year for cross country and was also selected as the Villanova Female Senior Student-Athlete of the Year.
