VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova Wildcats have added another newcomer to the fold for the 2011 season, it was announced today. Midfielder Oscar Umar, a native of Tamale, Ghana, who played at The Kent School in Connecticut, is the latest member of the class of 2015 to join the Wildcats, who will convene for the start of camp next week.
"From the first time we met Oscar, we knew he was a special student athlete and someone we wanted at Villanova," stated Wildcats head coach Tom Carlin. "On the field he possesses the technical ability, work rate and field awareness to be an immediate attacking threat here at Villanova and in the Big East Conference.
"Off the field his unparalleled education and experiences at the Right to Dream Academy and the Kent School make him a natural yet unique future leader of our men's soccer program. We are confident that he will serve as a valuable ambassador for Villanova University as he truly embodies the mission of the University, which is to transform hearts, minds, and souls."
At the Kent School Umar was a 2009 first team All-Connecticut choice (CSCA) and was a two-time first team choice of the WNEPSSA. In 2010, he served as a team captain and prior to coming to America was a part of the Right to Dream Academy in Accra, Ghana.
Villanova begins preparations for the 2011 regular season next week. It opens the season on Aug. 26 at its West Campus Soccer Complex when it hosts Manhattan (4:00 p.m.).
